Castello di Amorosa is a Tuscan-style castle and winery located in Calistoga, California, in Napa Valley. It was built by fourth-generation vintner Dario Sattui, who fulfilled his dream of constructing an authentic 13th-century style Italian castle to house his wines.
History and construction
- A lifelong passion: Dario Sattui, the great-grandson of an Italian immigrant who founded a winery in 1885, was fascinated by medieval architecture and committed to honoring his heritage. He spent over 15 years and a reported $40 million bringing his vision to life.
- Authentic craftsmanship: To create an authentic medieval feel, the 121,000-square-foot castle was built with historically accurate materials and techniques. Sattui imported nearly one million antique bricks and roof tiles from Europe and used hand-hewn wood and hand-chiseled stones.
- Opened to the public: The castle winery officially opened its doors in April 2007, featuring 107 rooms across eight levels, both above and below ground.
